Detour: A Documentary About the Contemporary Art Movement in KSA

The contemporary art movement in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is gaining momentum in more ways than one (Read our coverage here, here and here). With the support of initiatives like Edge of Arabia, contemporary art is having its moment in and around the region – though let’s be honest and admit that it’s more appreciated internationally than it is locally.

Detour is a feature documentary that aims to explore the emerging contemporary art movement in the KSA, as well as delve into the lives of the artists in the industry. With commentary by emerging and/or prominent Saudi artists like Manal Al Dowayan (who we interviewed for “The Art & Design Issue”), this is surely a film to keep an eye out for.

Snapshots of Deco Expo 2012

The Khaleejesque team visited DecoExpo2012 which took place from 1-3, May 2012 at 360 mall. It’s an exhibition that showcases businesses related to interior design and home furniture; various companies from inside and outside Kuwait have participated. The exhibition also includes kitchen accessories, wallpaper and paintings, it was a great opportunity for someone who is considering redecorating their home or adding a new addition to their furniture. As we wandered around the different booths, which were well organized, we noticed how every booth had its unique style; they suit the tastes of all people with the modern/classic furniture and interior design products. What we personally liked was the display of carpets that were randomly spread across the showroom, their vibrant colors and intriguing designs are what we liked the most about them. The way all the products were showcased was brilliant and the display alone is enjoyable. Visiting DecoExpo2012 was a wonderful experience, and we definitely look forward to their next exhibition!

Brand New Trailers of Upcoming Summer Blockbusters

Anxiously awaiting summer blockbusters is a favorite pastime for every movie fanatic in the world, and while super heroes reign supreme this year (and every year it seems), here are brand new trailers for The Dark Knight Rises (the husky voice should have its own credit), The Amazing Spider Man (Can Andrew Garfield pull it off?), and The Expendables 2 (Anymore action stars and we’d think it was a comedy!). These trailers really make us look forward to spending hours in the cinema this summer!

LeGally Local: A New Comedy YouTube Series

Who doesn’t love a good YouTube video? Especially when it includes self-deprecating humor, or candid mockery of stereotypes and whatnot.

That’s why we were delighted to learn about a new Dubai-based web series called LeGally Local.

Created by Emirati Amnah Bin Bahar, it’s a “not your average comedy that challenges the “Emirati” stereotype revolving around 3 Emirati girls Fatoom, Amoon, and Asoom.” The series will follow the trio’s hilarious adventures in their hometown.
