Voice for Success: When Inspiring Local Activists Tackle Social Issues

Have you ever wanted to be active in your community and literally ‘voice’ your concerns? You can now. Voice for Success is a program that aims to raise awareness on the social and environmental problems that young activists are working on solving in Kuwait. Created by en.v in collaboration with The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), the initiative is basically “dedicated to social responsibility in the Arab world. en.v’s primary objective is to seek out public sector bodies, private sector and civil society organizations in the region, document their efforts, and create interactivity between them towards developing a more thought-conscious society”.

Voice for Success developed short videos and articles to illustrate the initiatives and contributions of the social developments in Kuwait, all their content is promoted through its online news portal as well as through YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Faisal Al Fuhaid is one of the young activists the program focuses on, in his video report he talks about why he decided to get involved in fighting against bullying and discrimination in Kuwaiti schools. Dalal Al Abdulrazzak is another candidate who tells about about the consequences of over-fishing on Kuwait’s marine life. By sharing their achievements with your friends and family you can show your support and help raise awareness on these problems taking place in our society.

Fearless Encounters: A Documentary Honoring The Kuwaiti Oil Firefighting Team

Fearless Encounters is a new documentary film honoring the Kuwaiti Oil Firefighting Team. The film was never edited or released until 2011. Shot 20 years ago by Kuwaiti filmmaker, Talal Showaish-Salem, who spent 6 weeks with the team in the horrific inferno, the film tells the inside untold story of the Kuwaiti oil firefighters’ heroic fearless encounters.

When Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s army was forced out of Kuwait by the world coalition forces in February 1991, out of spite and hatred he ordered his defeated retreating army to blow up all of Kuwait’s oil wells. More than 650 oil wells were on fire for 8 months, burning on average 6 million barrels of oil per day. In total, more than 1 billion barrels of crude oil was burnt.

The Kuwaiti firefighting team started 180 days after the main 4 world famous, American and Canadian oil firefighting teams. The Kuwaiti team overwhelmed the world by their unmatched speed in killing the fiercest oil well fires, reaching temperatures of 2000C. Against all bets, the Kuwaitis managed to extinguish the biggest well in Kuwait BG160, which was burning 60,000 barrels of oil per day. With their speed and relentless enthusiasm, they ignited the competitive spirit amongst all the other firefighting teams, which lead to extinguishing all the fires in 7 months only, compared to the initial world expert predictions of 5 years.

Meet Sonia Hensler, The Whimsical Illustrator Behind Khaleejesque’s Second Issue Cover

Khaleejesque’s second print issue is officially making its way all through Kuwait, and the rest of the Arab Gulf very soon, and while we highly recommend you pick a copy, we’d also like to share the story behind the cover of the magazine. Being a quarterly publication (for the time being) and wanting to focus on a specific issue in each print run, we felt it was important to break through the mold and present an unusual cover to complement the content and visuals of the magazine itself.

In came Sonia Hensler, a celebrated illustrator with an impressive repertoire of artwork and covers for magazines such as The Wall Street Journal, LVMH, LOEWE, TopShop, WMS Spear’s, Diplomat, and many more. Based in the UK, Hensler finds herself producing whimsical and theatrical creations with just the right amount of playfulness. While seeking inspiration from the opulence found in fashion, theatre, food, and film, Hensler combines these elements to create highly stylized  and effortless work.

Needless to say, it was a breeze working on Khaleejesque’s second print issue cover with Hensler. Going through three different cover concepts, each one completely unrelated to the next, we settled on a completely illustrated cover which emphasizes the Arab sense of embellishment and patterns in a fresh and contemporary way. We went through different color palettes and didn’t settle on the final look until a day before the magazine actually went into print!

We think our move paid off since the feedback on the cover has been quite overwhelming and we were lucky enough to have Hensler to work with.

Be sure to check out Sonia Hensler’s site www.soniahensler.com to view more of her stunning artwork.
