The idea of a Dubai-based book club was born on social networking site Twitter, when a few like-minded folks got down to discussing books and recommending titles for the others to read. But, feeling the need to break free from the 140 character shackles, Anastacia M. aka @TDAllonsy decided to take these online musings a few steps further.

Within 24 hours of its online advent on the 17th of December 2009, the TwitBookClub (named after it’s Twitter hash-tag) had found itself a sponsor. The Jashanmal bookstores officially volunteered to sponsor the unique book club by providing the venue for the monthly meet-ups as well as by giving discounts for the club members.

The idea behind the club is to gather all book-loving ‘Tweeps’ (yes, all members must be on Twitter) to discuss books, reading and anything related to that area. Most join as an attempt to revive the forgotten habit, whilst others sign up in order to expand their reading horizons.

The club’s inaugural meeting on Saturday, the 16th of January, witnessed the launch of Jashanmal Bookstores’ official website (www.Jashanmalbooks.com) as well as the democratic selection of the TwitBookClub’s first official picks.

Each member would ‘take the stage’ for a few minutes to convince his/her peers to read their recommendations, and towards the end of the meeting a show of hands determined what 4 titles (out of the many suggested) are to be read by next the month.

All genres are welcome (even chick-lit and sci-fi), and all members are encouraged to read out of their comfort zone; and all members are given a 20% discount at any of the Jashanmal bookstores on all titles selected at the meetings, plus a 10% percent off tag on any of the other books in store.

The TwitBookClub aims to regroup every third Saturday of the month at Dubai’s much-loved gallery The Shelter from 11.00am-2.00pm. Again, all members must be on Twitter, and interested tweeps can register by following @TBookClub. However, all are free to join the club’s GoodReads group on www.goodreads.com, or visit the the TwitBookClub’s website www.twitbookclub.org for more details.
